LEVEL 5. Pupils continue to breathe on one side only, while mastering the art of “bent elbow” freestyle. In level 5 pupils also learn to swim the butterfly stroke. Most level 5 classes and up are held in the 25 metre pool where pupils develop the confidence to cope with the longer distance and deeper water. Instruction at this level equips the swimmers with the skills they need to take part in regular and exciting Friday night Race Nights.
LEVEL 6. Breaststroke is introduced for the first time. Bilateral (both sides breathing) freestyle is mastered and backstroke and butterfly stroke are refined to the stage where they become fluent and easy. Once pupils have mastered all four strokes to an acceptable level they have a choice of two paths. They may move up to the Level 7 stroke class where instruction includes starts, turns, finishes racing techniques and school carnival preparation.
Alternatively the competitively minded may wish to attempt the SQUAD TEST
which will enable them to graduate to the first level of the Squad Training.
LEVEL 7. Takes pupils to a slightly different form of instruction where pupils are given the skills to compete in the school carnivals, learning starts, turns, finishes and racing techniques. This is a great alternative for those who wish to continue to improve their swimming but who do not wish to make the commitment to Squad Training.
